Alex Katz

Alex Katz’s paintings are celebrated for their crisp lines, flat planes of color, and distinctive portrayals of contemporary life. Working across portraiture and landscape, Katz developed a highly recognizable visual language that blends figuration with a pared-down, almost cinematic sense of composition. Often depicting friends, family, and cultural figures, his works capture fleeting moments with an economy of form that echoes both advertising imagery and modernist painting. Among his notable works are Blue Hat, White Visor, and Cow, which exemplify his bold use of color and simplified shapes. Katz studied at The Cooper Union and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and has exhibited widely in cities including New York, London, Paris, and Tokyo. His work is held in major museum collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Tate, among many others.
